Instrumental Enrichment

Who taught you how to learn?

Bring great thinking to life..

The reality is that few of us were taught basic learning skills or educated on how to develop learning strategies. This impacts on the manner in which we learn, or do not learn, effectively. It also directly affects our ability in decision making and problem solving.

Instrumental Enrichment was developed by Prof Reuven Feuerstein in order to assist people in developing learning strategies. Once the ability of easier learning skills has been acquired, the results are profound. IE can be facilitated at all levels and every person benefits from the experience.

The concept

Reuven Feuerstein is acknowledged as one of the leading psychologists of his generation. His methods are recognised around the world as effective in schools, adult education programmes, therapeutic programmes and industry. Instrumental Enrichment is based on theories which, simply stated, hypothesise that thinking skills can be taught and learned and that these skills are transferrable and usable in all areas of life.

IE is applied to a remarkably wide range of diverse populations, from culturally deprived and learning disabled individuals to gifted underachievers; with brain damaged and psychiatric patients as well as in teacher training frameworks; with parents of children at risk and in adult education. The materials of IE can be used for remedial teaching in rehabilitative educational frameworks as well as for mainstream education.

Christa Rudd is credited to offer IE Standed, IE Basic and IE Tactical. The main goal is to enhance the cognitive modifiability and social adaptability of the individual, so as to increase his capacity to benefit from his direct exposure to environmental stimuli and life experiences.

LPAD
Learner propensity assessment device (LPAD)

Intelligence is dynamic and modifiable, not static or fixed! Excellence

Intelligence and individual potential is not static, it is dynamic and changes as each person develops and is exposed to different experiences. It is with this concept of cognitive modifiability - the ability to continue developing and adapting cognitively, that Prof Feuerstein developed the LPAD.

Feuerstein defines intelligence is the propensity (the dynamic process of change) of the individual to undergo changes and to develop the skills to adapt. The LPAD provides a number of dynamic assessment instruments that can assist in identifying and addressing areas where the stimulation of cognitive development would be beneficial. The LPAD identifies and address learning difficulties. Alternatively it can provide pre- and post assessment when Instrumental Enrichment or other learning interventions are facilitated.

The process

LPAD is an interactive process between assessor and assessee. The process differs from conventional psychometric assessments in that no 'normative score' such as an Intelligence Quotient is computed. It differs also in that mediation is an essential part of the process. Tasks are set with the focus primarily on how these are performed thereby identifying areas of cognitive development. Mediation is provided in the cognitive functions and strategies necessary to master the tasks. The ease or difficulty with which these strategies are applied forms the basis of a judgement as to the investment of effort, and types of mediation, likely to be needed in the longer term development delivered either through the Instrumental Enrichment programme or the intensive MLE intervention. Because of the detailed nature of such assessment, the LPAD takes considerably longer than conventional assessments. As the programme progresses, we encourage parents / teachers / therapists to observe the sessions in order to understand the principles of the Mediated Learning Experience (MLE) in order to continue the process after the assessment.
